Why does is useable design space reduce?

I am all in manual mode. See the white shadow all around the clear black. If any part of my design is in the white part, it acts like the art is to big. Where did the white come from and why?

Thank you!!! I understand now. Speed is in direct relationship with how wide the white (margins) are. You have saved my night of work. Kay
