Copy and Paste Functionality in Inkscape?

The Latest Improvements page from 2 weeks ago states that Inkscape users (and Adobe Illustrator 2015) have a copy and paste capability to import designs.

“Inkscape users, rejoice! You never need to save your files again. (Note: while technically true this is not actually recommended). Instead of saving SVGs and uploading them, you can simply copy your design with the copy command, go to app.glowforge.com, and hit paste. Boom! Ready to print.”

Have tried every which way but loose to figure out how to use the capability. Nothing seems to happen in Chrome or Edge. Apparently I’m not the only one. Any advice?

I can’t get it to work in Inkscape either…

I tried a couple of ways and gave up. Using Inkscape 0.91, Win10 and Firefox.

I’m so sorry you hit a snag. I want to quickly check where in the app you are pasting your file.

You can paste your file into the file upload page, not the workspace that shows the bed image.

If you’re you’re still having trouble after pasting in the file upload page, can you let us know more information about your browser?

  1. Go to https://www.whatismybrowser.com/
  2. Click the button that says “Link”
  3. Copy the highlighted link
  4. Reply to this, and paste in the link provided

Primarily Inkscape 0.92.1 Chrome, Windows 10. Same problem in Microsoft Edge.

Trying to paste here:

Maybe you could be more clear on what I am allowed to copy while I’m in Inkscape and where I can paste it. Tried almost every possible page/object/file combination that I could think of, but am guessing I should be able to copy something from within Inkscape and paste it in the design space?

Works great from AI CC on Win 10 using Chrome.

File shows in catalog as “Pasted_Design” for every, erm, pasted design.

Edit:

Another thing that works great is dragging new SVG files into the workspace. It’s a great way to add vectors to existing vectors. When I come out to the upload/catalog page the files show until I do a browser refresh. then the added design goes away.

Yeah, I have gathered from other posts that AI CC seems to be working. The update says Inkscape too and haven’t seen anyone successfully paste from Inkscape and Windows 10.

Inkscape 0.92, Win10 & Chrome. No go.

I thought they’d warned that AI not CC version would work. I’m happy either way.

Check out the edit on above post for dragging additional vector stuff into workspace too. Maybe I’m behind the times again

I can drag a file into the workspace just fine. Have not used that feature before. Can’t copy/paste anything in the design space though.

No button the says “Link” in the web page. However there is something that says Share Your Info With Tech Support and a box underneath with a pseudo-URL that when pasted in another browser section shows the info so I expect that’s what you want.

As noted in my previous post, Inkscape 0.92 and Chrome on Win10.

OK apparently I was Copy and Pasting correctly. Pasting an object from Illustrator 10 (15 years old) to the design space works just fine… Does not work at all with Inkscape.

Thank you so much for the details. I’m looking into it now. As soon as I have more information I’ll update this thread.

I know this topic started as a “…for Inkscape” request, but I’m going to just throw this out there…

If you happen to have Affinity Designer, you may need to enable this functionality for copying your designs and pasting it into the Glowforge UI:

Just an update that the team is still investigating. Ultimately this feature relies on there being an SVG in the copy buffer, and whether that’s true or not depends on Inkscape/Illustrator, not us - so it’s a bit of a sleuthing project to figure out when it works and when it doesn’t.

I know that the team will not necessarily see this since it’s not a new topic but here is additional info into the inability to copy and paste SVG from Inkscape. @semhar

Copy and Paste will not work directly from Inkscape into the Glowforge design space. However I can copy from Inkscape and Paste into Illustrator just fine. I can then “Copy or Ctrl-C” the same object in Illustrator and Ctrl-V it into the Glowforge design space perfectly.

So there is an SVG object in the buffer from Inkscape, that object is recognized and interpreted by Illustrator, but not recognized when trying to Paste into the Glowforge design space. Copy and Paste of that Inkscape created object works just fine from Illustator.

Is it an Inkscape or a Glowforge issue? I don’t know, but either way the “Latest Improvements” page claims an Inkscape functionality that is not there and should be edited if you decide it’s a low priority. Thanks.

Don’t know if that check box is enabled in my app., but I have tried the copy paste thing and it worked. Was going to mention it in this thread, but didn’t know if it would go unappreciated when the discussion was about Inkscape. So, thanks for being the more daring of the two of us!

People who would complain about a thread not being pure have run out of things to complain about in their day to day life.

Totally… Especially around here with this group. :joy:
