The QR code is not a necessary thing, and many times the Glowforge can’t read it. Simply choose your material from the drop down menu and the settings will auto populate whether or not you are actually using the Proofgrade item.

I do however plan to keep the QR codes from the GF proofgrade material, in order to use on the same material that has no QR code(not bought on GF)

People have been doing this for years but usually abandon the practice because they find using the drop-down material selection is just as fast as messing around finding the QR code they want and placing it on the material and then later having to pull it out and stash it away.

The ability to define custom material settings was added to make it even easier - no need to pick a Proofgrade material to get “close enough” settings or tweak them. Your “Home Depot travertine tile” settings saved as a custom set are the same every time.

Add me to the list. I think I used them less than a handful of times, then just used the material dropdown. Seemed like a good idea at the time.

The QR codes are stupid and unnecessary. You can’t engrave over them, so I have to put ProofGrade material in upside-down anyway.

Edit - not raining on your parade. It’s just a pointless exercise.

Not to speak for @jamesdhatch but I can assure you that he was in no way trying to be anything other than helpful. He’s a longstanding contributor to the forum and is nothing but informative and kind.

What I think he was trying to do was let you know about the utility of the custom settings and let you know that many people have found the QR code thing to be a little less practical that it seems.

You may find it to be your perfect solution, who knows! If you give it and shot and love it please let us know.
