Edge Lit question

hey gang, I’ve only ever engraved to make an edge lit acrylic “light”.

do you get a decent effect with just scoring?

I was just wondering about that.

Yes, but it has to be deep to catch the light.

Think “Nixie tube” type effects.

gotcha. I can split the design a little bit. and Score the top half deeper. on my engraves I had done a gradient fill in the past.

Actually, the simpler solution to a “gradient score” is to simply lift up the edge closest to the light source a little, and set focus manually to a workable compromise. When I did it, I think I set the focus to the lowest point, which was the part closest to the light strip. I am certain I used 1/8" material to lift up that side of the 1/8" acrylic.

Interesting approach, thanks for the heads up!

I’ve had great results with scoring. Here’s a gift set I made for a friend a while back. (The Labyrinth acrylic is engraved, but all others are scored.)

There’s a post about the method I used here:

Mine were fine line scores, I’ve never used them for “solid area” effect like above, and I like that.

Very nice. They all look fabulous.

Those turned out terrific. Scoring it is!!!

will save a lot of time too. a huge benefit because I’m sucking heated air out of the house.

Whoa – never thought to try that method. Very nice!

I think the method may be a bit more complicated than it needs to be. Custom engrave settings can do essentially the same thing.

Yeah, that would effectively be the same thing.

I made some really fine “grids” using a super-low DPI engrave. I shared them here, wish I could find them…

Something like this?
