Element steps not functioning properly, i.e. cutting all parts despite engrave designation Solution

Hello,

To anyone who is experiencing an issue with individual elements of a project not functioning correctly recently, i.e., entire project cuts, despite having engrave and score selected as steps, I have a workaround that seems to work. Sorry for the long-winded text ahead, just skip to the end if you want just the solution.

First, my apologies if this is the incorrect platform or usage of this chat. I am new to it and was just trying to reach out to help fellow users if I can. I have had 2 Pros for about 5 years now, so I have had my fair share of issues to resolve.

My issue, and it seems others are experiencing this as well, was that a loaded project would display incorrectly in the printing “steps” on the left of the desktop. The print order was not followed. A project would essentially just ignore the steps and cut all parts, despite engraving and scoring being selected. I contacted support; however, they just responded with the usual: clear browser cache, update, try another browser, reload the project, etc. Nothing worked. My design had been working for 4 years; I am not sure if it has to do with the Inkscape graphics program I use, or just an update with the Glowforge app, but it nearly stopped all usage of the machine.

The solution, which is fairly simple but needs to be done with each uploaded file, seems to relate to the file being duplicated in the workspace.

Solution steps:
In order to restore proper element steps, upload the project to the app desktop as usual. Select the entire project within the bounding box with your mouse.

Right-click “Copy”

Right-click again, then select “Paste as new step”

Left-click on the new copy and move it to a free space on the desktop.

You can now delete the original uploaded file.

  • New Note–Additionally, it also seems that just copying and pasting the project may produce the same results.

The copy of the original file will now have the proper steps listed on the left. Just adjust the proper settings, operational order, and placement of the material.

I hope this helps those of us affected until an official fix a found from Glowforge.

Good luck and happy vaporizing.

Thank you for this solution. There are numerous reports in Facebook groups about this unusual behavior. When I experienced a similar problem, Glowforge support said to reset the design and use a different browser. That worked for the Gift of Good Measure, but not all files are that easy to reset.

I am a long-time user (one of the original Crowd-Funding Pro buyers) and have been experiencing this same type of thing where, say a 4-step project will populate on the GFUI, and on the steps on the left-side bar, but the graphics on the-left side bar all show up in the top box with the other 3 boxes being able to individually program, but not having thier own graphic in them to show which step belongs to which box/setting. When trying to set each box with it’s own setting, they still end up doing what the first box/step is set to… Sometimes.

Even if I clear cashe, history, restart browser, restart glowforge, or use a different browser, nothing fixes this issue. If I follow the above instructions and copy/paste/delete the orginal design, sometimes it populates the boxes/steps - it works and sometimes it doesn’t…

Pretty frustrating as we are customizing people’s personal items and if we mess it up, thier item is ruined.

It would be great *GLOWFORGE* (cough, cough) if this issue would get resolved…

Glowforge does not monitor this forum as they once did. Please make sure to submit support tickets detailing this problem.

Request from :glowforge: staff regarding what you should put in your ticket.

Great workaround though!
