Now. Now is too early for Christmas. 
For coasters I say don’t overthink it. Simple and well executed is king here. They’re ephemeral by nature, if you make them too fancy people won’t use them.
Even these, simple cork engraves and my dad won’t use them. They’re too special

Meh, for most of the people I am giving to, they probably wouldn’t use them anyway I guess. I am thinking of a small family tree design. Since this machine can work magic on small font.

Just remember to invert before engraving in slate. It lasers white on black.
Oh and shellac or mineral oil before lasering to get better contrast.

Ignoring the too early aspect, the coolest ones I’ve seen are the QR codes with homes’ wifi on them - beautiful and useful - and almost guarantees it’ll be out and used.
It’d have to be a house you’ve been to though!
