Is there an easy way to take the backing off?

I’m having trouble.

I’ve used various methods, depending on the material you’re talking about.
I found it really frustrating on leather.
Woods I usually just rub my fingertips raw rubbing it off. Works great. And for like a week afterwards I can commit various crimes and not get caught because I have no fingerprints!
Acrylics I either use the fingertip rubbing method or my plastic scraper. You can also wet it (you can soak it really… it’s just plastic) and that can help get masking off.

Welcome @carroll_c to the forum. One solution is to remove the masking from the top if the process allows it. Depending on the power of your engrave and what you want to happen, even acrylic can be done without masking.

Wood can be cleaned after if you process without masking. Many people prefer to clean the surface rather than fight the masking.
