Looking for another musical instrument to make for my engineering class! Any ideas?

So So far we have made ukuleles, kalimbas, I am thinking the next one my be a Lyre (no idea how to make a regular harp).

The key is that they are low cost, I can now make ukes for probably under 10 bucks, the biggest cost is the tuners (if i could 3d print and hold tension I would be able to make them for so cheap lol).

Lyre’s seem kind of same-y to the kalimba, I would love more interesting ideas!

How about a wooden tongue drum? I know they have another name, which can’t remember.

Or a hammered dulcimer?

How fun! I want one of each! Not that I’m musically inclined any more, but they’d be fun to play while sitting on the deck!

I have a hammered dulcimer and love it. I also have a psaltry-that’s a lot smaller and probably doable…

I love these!

So you said this is for your engineering class - what about talking to the music teacher and seeing if they have any ideas? Maybe there is something that the music class could use or just some cool ideas they might have?

A slide guitar, a zither, a hurdy gurdy, and a log drum are some things that AI comes up with.

Here’s a harp I saw on Etsy

Here’s an item that was popular about 20 years ago. It might be time to bring them back: a door harp! Much simpler than many of the other instruments as well. Here’s an example:

Really? That’s a free design posted up here by @arh2 :frowning: Even the picture is stolen!

Really indeed. That is my design and photo and the background is my desk… I’m not going to do anything about it. I hope he/she has a good reason for needing the money. Otherwise, life has a way of catching up with you if you’re dishonest.

OMG really? I didn’t notice! This is messed up! You should report it to etsy.
Here’s the link.
Maybe we should review the rest of this guy’s listings to see if there are others. I haven’t checked yet.

Looks like - this one is @hansepe’s and while I could see two people coming up with the design, the stolen picture is pretty obvious.

Yup - and this one is @dink2344’s

Though at least it seems like they didn’t steal the images this time:

If any one does want to report them (only the creator can report for IP) the link is:
Etsy Reporting Portal. You do need to have an Etsy account to contact their support - which is very scummy/scammy on their part!

The shop’s address is: https://www.etsy.com/shop/HasVector

Thank you.

I went ahead and reported it. I would love if I could comment on the store but apparently you can only do that if you buy something and leave a review.

Perfect example of why I don’t share most of the stuff I would be happy to here. It’s also why I won’t support sites like Etsy, they don’t care about anything but money.

I have shared privately with individuals I know and trust.

I did report the first one and said it was breaking the law. When it asked for specifics, I said it was a copyright violation and linked to the original post. I feel like people like that ruin things for everyone. It makes others less likely to share.

Precisely. All my work is my own design, except for incorporating graphic images I find in the public domain. But I won’t share it here because I know someone will steal it and sell it.

You could do like me and upload terrible designs. I’ve never found any of my designs for sale anywhere!

Your designs are great, but you have the most creative ideas. I really just want a day with you to pick your brain.

This made me literally laugh out loud. Thank you for that, I needed the laugh!
(And I’ve never seen a terrible design from you, btw! LOL)
