Not cutting through Proofgrade Medium Acrylic

Hi all, I’m trying to start my yearly Christmas ornament and having an issue cutting. I haven’t used the Glowforge in a month, and I’m finding I can’t cut through Proofgrade Medium White Acrylic. The 12x20 piece is set down securely. Even at Full Power, the Glowforge has only cut fully through about 60% of the ornament. Any thoughts or advice to check/clean?

Thanks so much!

If you had it pinned down and didn’t move it on the bed, you can run a second Cut pass and finish the cut. If it’s too late for that, you can try slowing down the speed of the cut by about 5-10 points and that should finish the cut in one pass.

Thanks, Jules! I’ll give it a try. :grinning:

That’s a great workaround. And I hope it works for you, @gregk2!

But I think the problem still needs to be addressed by Support. Assuming the machine is clean, I believe Proofgrade acrylic should work as expected under just about any circumstances. I mean, wood soaks up humidity, warps easily, and is naturally imperfect. Acrylic shouldn’t suffer those issues. So that leads me to think there’s either something wrong with the Proofgrade settings, something wrong with this sheet (too thick?), or something wrong with the machine.

Thanks for letting us know. I’m sorry that your print didn’t come out beautifully! @jules and @Tom_A, thank you for your help.

To cut successfully, there are three important things to check. The first one, which you already mentioned, is that your material must lie flat. This requires a clean, properly installed crumb tray and flat materials. Second, there must be no obstructions, dirt, or damage preventing the laser light from reaching your material. Third, your design must be set up properly - for example, with lines that are fully on the material and that are set to cut. It’s hard to know which issue might be affecting your print, but if you follow the instructions in the cut-through troubleshooter, we’ll be able to get to the bottom of it.

Once you’ve inspected and cleaned, please try another print. We included an extra piece of Proofgrade Draftboard with your materials shipment for troubleshooting. Please print the Gift of Good Measure on that Proofgrade Draftboard and let me know the result. If it doesn’t print well, please let me know the date and time of your print and send photos of the front and back of the print. Thank you!

When this happens to me it time to clean my machine. There could be something in the lens.

It’s been a little while since I’ve seen any replies on this thread so I’m going to close it. If you still need help with this please either start a new thread or email support@glowforge.com.
