QOTD from Glowforge: What Proofgrade materials do you want?

1/8 - 1/4 assorted hardwoods (cherry, maple, oak, bamboo… birch?)
1/8 - 1/4 acrylic (especially glossy black… to etch a ‘frosted’ black-on-black look)
Rubber Stamp
T-Shirt Transfer material?
Vegan Leather

The two tone acrylic and hardwoods sound great! I would be curious to see the color pairings, as that would really be a determining factor. Im also wondering if there’s some gradation between the colors or if it’s more like a laminate.

  • Paper of various weights that laser well in cutting and marking

I do not know anything about how a paper’s makeup and weight and colorant work with a laser. Can I just go to a fancy stationery store and get whatever? If we need certain types for certain applications, having them readily available along with other materials would be convenient.

Does it cut through glass?

All the stuff mentioned before and,

•sheets of starch foam packing peanut like material
•polyethylene/aluminum film - Capri-sun pouch material
•thick paper - many colors and thicknesses
•fabric- laser cut quilt pieces!

We’ll suggest more as we see or think of more things to laser.

Assorted hardwood.
laser safe leather

To start with but really want to try everything. And the list of what I want to make would be way too long, easier to just look at my pintrest ;D
One main thing though is trying to put my sisters art onto wood and maybe acrylic.

I had bad stuff happen with marine grade plywood, maybe the special glue. Need to test it carefully, preferably on someone else’s laser.

1/8 inch hardwood
1/4 inch hardwood
rubber stamp sample material
assorted acrylic

The 2 color acrylic would be great as solid color is easier to get locally ( as opposed to mail order).
For the wood, at least one that would be suited for photo engraving to show off the GF abilities.

I would also like to do contrasting wood glue ups. But it would be darn hard to glue up any qty of 1/4 or even 1/2 so I would most likely get larger lumber and face, joint, plain, glue up, section up on a table saw and re plain down to dimension

I would love assorted hardwoods, both in 1/8 and 1/4 for depth, contrast and leather. I know the hardwoods will be contrastual, so there are many possibilities there. The living hinge is very exciting, and am looking forward to creating a working clockwork wall.

Hadn’t even occurred to me. Brilliant!

  • 1/8" plywood
  • 1/4" plywood
  • veneers and/or veneered plywood
  • inlay materials (bone, shell, etc)
  • leather
  • masking material for paint-like-things
  • masking material for sandblastig/etc (credit to jkopel)
  • laserable glues, paints, etc.

For me Proofgrade materials fall into two categories: materials that are too inconsistent to use off the shelf (plywood) and materials that save us the research to ensure they’re laser safe (masking materials, glue). For that reason I’ve intentionally left off hardwoods since a Proofgrade version would cost more and not add value compared to buying lumber and resawing it myself. That calculation is different for everyone though, and I expect lots of people would love a good selection of hardwoods. Same logic applies for acrylic.
