What is....?

Just curious… when going to pick up some more :proofgrade: supplies I noticed , in the acrylic section, the statement…“Engraves on opaque acrylic may be subtle or hard to see from certain angles but can be enhanced with an engrave crayon…”. What exactly is an engrave crayon?

I’d never heard of such things until now, but I got lots of hits on Google. Here are a couple of them:

Machine shops use them to make a dot peened mark, like a serial number or model number, more readable. Rub the wax crayon over the number, wax fills in the cavities, wipe off the excess on the surface with a solvent. Never heard of them being used on plastics, though.
