How to make contiguous text

I want to know how to cut names as one piece.
Circle
I have followed a number of tutorials and there’s always something different than what I’m seeing on the tutorial and it never works.

I don’t understand how to connect the nodes or which nodes to connect.

Does anybody know of a tutorial that will help me understand what I’m doing?

What program are you using?

Ditto to what @dklgood said, and in addition - do you have Premium?

Here are excellent directions from @Jules on how to do this in Inkscape, a free design program.

I’m using Inkscape.

Thanks for the cuttle app I will check out

I don’t really understand Vector graphics very well.
I saw a tutorial where you added a node to each letter that you wanted to connect, and then clicked join two segments or something like that.
It worked for me while I followed a tutorial, but I couldn’t make it work after that even going back to the same tutorial I couldn’t make it work.
If anybody knows a good tutorial on understanding nodes, I’d like to know about it
There are so many terms in inscape and illustrator that I don’t understand it’s just overwhelming trying to learn it.
Help I’m sinking

I will give it a try thank you

Below is a good walkthrough on the basics of how to use nodes. I’m going to guess your join didn’t work because both edges had lines - at least that’s the most common error I see folks running into. In the tutorial he uses the “Delete Segment Between Two non-Endpoint Nodes.” command. I use that button constantly (and the one to its left which is the Join Segment…!

I know going from one to two screens sounds like just making things more complicated, but if all the popups were on your screen at once to could not see your work. However, if you could leave them up all the time on another screen you could see them change, or make decisions there and understand much easier what is happening.

Text is a very good example. The word has the letters nested under it and each letter has the one or more lines nested under that, and sometimes they jump up that nesting and all the nodes vanish. With all that obvious on the popup while you work it is a lot easier to know what happened. This is how I had it arranged on that second screen some time ago but you can see at the top of each little window the name of the popup that you see in the pulldown menu.

You can see that a path with a blue fill is selected with an image above it but for some reason not visible on the screen at that moment, perhaps to see what vanished so I know which one it is. It is probibly a box where the image is the engraving and the line is a cut out. That is how I can know so much of what is happening without even seeing the image
