npgraphicdesign:
and it’s worth it
You know your projects better than anyone of course but a nicely fit finger joint with glue is indistinguishable from a pure friction fit, and it is stronger and goes together much more easily than a pure friction fit.
Light kerf adjust plus glue:
Hello, we are the Tuit family.

First things first, much credit goes to @tjleasa , his glass coaster set and box were the inspiration here. In fact, ignore my post and go read hers , it’s way better.
Still here? OK, I warned you.
So, for father’s day, I wanted to cook up a quick gift. My pop is a big Red Sox fan, so I landed on a coaster set. Of course, it’s my dad, so I wanted to do it right, so I made a box to present/store them in.

I made a MTG deck box out of bubinga. I stole some design cues about fingerjoints from @geek2nurse , but other than that it’s a fairly standard box, except for the closure system.
I elected to go with a snap-on leather retention belt.
Things to look out for which I may or may not have screwed up:
Get the inner dimensions correct. Don’t waste materials on too-small boxes.
Be careful of glue squeeze-out on the inside corners. It’ll get in t…

The box is lined with black oiled leather, which is engraved with 50 stars in honor of her 50th birthday.

The lid has an inset bronze colored mirror (Inventables acrylic bronze mirror), and it appears hazy in these pictures because I have left the protective plastic on it.

You can’t tell the difference between the joint styles in person… my conclusion was that the pain of going for pure friction fits just didn’t serve me anymore so I changed my design workflow.
