Settings for off label wood

I have thin basswood 12x12x1/8” thickness

I can’t figure out the settings I need to cut through it completely!

Need to do a test of the various speeds and power settings to see what works best for your material. There is a template on this site. Takes a bit of time but it can be set up. On the other hand, you can try the proof grade settings for basswood and see if your material is adequately cut on that setting.

Welcome to the forum.

Which machine do you have? Usually starting with the Proofgrade settings for a similar material is a good place to start your testing for new materials.

this is all good advice. Since you’re new, you might like to read #6 on my FAQ to get some explicit instructions about testing materials and what the settings do:

The FAQ is full of tips, if you skim through it you’ll jumpstart your laser skillset. Have fun!

Just use Proofgrade settings for Bassword (ply or hardwood as appropriate).. make sure the material is pinned down well, and check carefully to see if the parts have cut thru before trying to remove. If not, run it again at double the speed or half the power. They’re not linear settings, but it’s usually enough to get it to work..

While this might work, you’re also likely to overburn and get flashback – proofgrade settings are often overpowered. A material test is preferable and likely faster than running the job twice as described.

One thing I have found with wood cuts,. Just a bit too strong is better than almost strong enough. Most wood will vary so strong enough for the hardest might over-do the softer areas but basswood doesn’t have those issues.
