That being said, necessity is the mother of invention. it’s possible that a glass etching solution might work, or sandblasting, but we’re going pretty far afield from “just put it in the laser and be done”.
I haven’t tried it yet, but I plan to do exactly the same project in the near future (customized whisky bottle). The bottle I’m customizing is too big and round for the GF so my plan is to use the laser to cut a stencil and then attach the stencil to the bottle and sandblast it.
The simplest and cheapest version of this concept would be to cut a stencil out of some adhesive paper masking material and use a chemical glass etching cream. You can buy the cream on Amazon or at most craft stores.
…
And of course, if you can’t engrave the mug, maybe the thing to do is make a nice custom coaster. You can cut it out of flat materials or even buy a coaster to modify. Here are a few examples that I’ve made of various types.
Hello, we are the Tuit family.

First things first, much credit goes to @tjleasa , his glass coaster set and box were the inspiration here. In fact, ignore my post and go read hers , it’s way better.
Still here? OK, I warned you.
So, for father’s day, I wanted to cook up a quick gift. My pop is a big Red Sox fan, so I landed on a coaster set. Of course, it’s my dad, so I wanted to do it right, so I made a box to present/store them in.

Materials are figured walnut, har…
It took some work to get it right, alignment of irregularly shaped (and thickness!) slate pieces, but the end result is going to be well-received, to say the least. I think the phrase “She’s going to flip out” is more accurate.
Next time, I’d take @kittski 's advice and wipe them with a light coat of oil prior to engraving to make the contrast a bit sharper, but I’m just thrilled.

Edit – Further (final) discussion of project:
So I’ve had these blank paper fiber coasters for a while and never got around to doing anything with them. No longer, here’s a quick engrave. Quick warning, it contains a little profanity, which has been blurred, even in the blurred image below (blurception!). Not appropriate for kids or sexists.
Bonus points if you identify all the logos…

On solid maple from gvwp.net .
Bonus: half size material test set. I like them, would make good magnets or pins…
