Last Week’s Highlights:
Weekly Highlights for the Week Ending February 11, 2017
Wisdom from the Staff:
If we use non-“Proof grade” materials will it invalidate the warranty?
No, it will not invalidate your warranty.
If you use products from other companies (materials, air filters, etc), it’s up to you to make sure they work properly. If the 3rd party product has a failure that damages your Glowforge, that failure isn’t covered by the Glowforge’s warranty. But we will not invalidate your warranty as a result.
Example: if you once cut 3rd party acrylic and then your intake fan stops, the fan will be covered under warranty. But if you cut 3rd party acrylic and it …
Can we use 0 to 255 Grayscale for relief carving?
Yes! You can prepare your 3D engravings as 0-255 greyscale bitmaps.
Happy Valentines Day!
Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone!
[Laser Pancakes - Glowforge 3D Laser Printer]
And for your enjoyment:
[image] [image]
@Shell reports that the image of Dan was actually a tiny/low res image (she did it as a joke last night and texted it to me) and then somehow it made it into the segment! Must do more pancake engrave experiments!
Do we still get flashback with paper on the back side of acrylics?
Much less so, although if you run too slowly, you’ll get enough to burn through the paper.
Glowforge goes Retro
A poet…we didn’t know it…
That Vizzini, he can design.
Yes, yes, some of the time.
Probably knows how to use a laser.
He has no clue. Thinks it’s a brassiere.
You have a great gift with your Glowforge.
Such a nice statement for you to disgorge.
Fezzik, are there rocks ahead?
They’re not Proofgrade and might dent the bed!
No more rhymes now, I mean it!
Anybody want a laser robot?
With apologies to the great S. Morganstern.
Pre-Release and Beta Baubles:
Gangsta Grab
So, I’d seen this clever design floating around pinterest for a coffee cup holder.
I liked it, but wanted something with more character. The large ring reminded me of the drum magazines of the old gangster tommy guns so I decided to make one based on that theme. First I found a picture of a tommy gun and manually traced the shapes I wanted for this design. Then I roughed out the general shapes I’d need to fit together and ended up with a fairly simple design.

Some Super Sweet Scales!
I have really been hoping to be able to get some deep etching for texures and am finally getting something that I like after some practice I started in Illustrator and made a circle with a gradient fill and a gradient border which I then converted into a texture.
after that I exported it as png and brought it into the printer interface to etch it into some 1/8" walnut hardwood. I’m really happy with how the fish scale texture feels and expect to use it in ano…
Popup Power
I wanted to improve the design a bit by adding color so I did this one to be cut from different sheets of cardstock and slot assembled. Here is the basic design.

Seems to work pretty well I think

That’s Thinking!
My partner studies Aristotle and translates Ancient Greek for a living.
Aristotle believed that the center of cognition and motion was the heart and not the brain. Hence, a valentine appropriate for my philosopher. (Made with a Glowforge Pre-Release model)

Sweet Treats
A test in multiplicity that worked great! Had my two favorite twins draw a Valentine that I attached to bubbles and bags of gum balls!!
Took the drawings back home & loaded the hand drawn Valentine into the Glowforge… scanned and shrunk the 11"x 8.5"" drawing down to 3"x 2" and duplicated each drawing 22 times! (Sorry dog ate the original drawings! They were pretty cute but you get the idea!)
[|187.5x250]
Ended up with super sweet Valentine’s that don’t look like any store bought nonsense!

Spicy Buns!
I moved recently and while I loved my spice rack, the new place has the stove in an island with a ledge that the spice rack just didn’t quite fit under. Also, the old spice rack limited me to 9 spices. I like to fill up at Market Spice at Pike Place, and anyone that’s been there knows you can’t limit yourself to nine options. Glowforge to the rescue! We ran some measurements, I drew some of my favorite characters on it to … spice it up (!) and voila, perfect fitting spice rack with waaay more sp…
Hearts Abound
I also made a thing, for the day:

Home is Where You Hang Your Hat
My wife has a lot of hats so I figured a hat rack was in order. The phrase and the little feet to hold the hats on their pegs were cut on the laser as well as the mounting points on the back that you can’t see. They are kind of ugly so I didn’t photograph them.

Glowforge Quotable Quotes Challenge
Here’s a challenge: Choose a famous quote or a line from a song or movie and Glowforgify it! That is, alter the original in some way that makes it pertain to Glowforge.
Feel free to wax philosophical and explain your quote in detail if you want. Or just let it stand on its own. Wisdom is welcome, but cheese is fine, too!
My cheesy contribution:
To 'forge or not to 'forge…that is the question…which I will constantly ask myself as I evaluate whether or not my materials will catch…
Automata Inspiration
[quote=“kittski, post:8, topic:6055”]
I adore Automata. This guy is one of my favorites and his work is amazing! A lot of this can be done with lasers and it’s one of the projects I hope to try with my GF.

Forum Guideline for Type A Personalities
Is your time more precious than others? Do you speed read through life searching for information with purpose? For those expecting this forum to be categorized and limited to information worthy of an old school encyclopedia, sorry.
So to best minimize the number of Orbital Fractures as a result of frequent eye rolling, attached are common forum guidelines:
Focus on topics created in the past 100 days. (Let’s face it, information older than your most recent Apple iPhone is not all that…

Wood Veneer Inlay Rings
I came across this backwards… I saw a review of his on the inexpensive low-wattage Banggood engravers first, and after digging in his older videos came across this gem.
He describes a simple way to make rings out of wood veneer, and he cuts inlays by hand and super-glues powdered brass in place. But who wants to cut inlays by hand when you have an engraving Glowforge with auto-focus?!

On the Chopping Block

Sorry forgot to post finished. My brother decided to go with a basic open frame to support the weight that also allowed him to put slats in to support pots and pans. Mounted on casters for mobility, the block is also gravity mounted so it can come out of the frame if desired and as the pots are supported by running slats the block bottom is flat and clean
When my kitchen is done we also have a dozen or so multi wood cutting boards to work on before easter
Cuttin Up Coinage
So true. I thought the same when I got my 1st order of jeweler saw blades. I use the saw to make guitar picks & spartan Face Masks out of coins & tokens [image] [image]

Formal Attire
Note: I have been reading the forums non-stop since Oct 2015, but this is my very first post…
I have a family wedding coming up this weekend and the groom is super into bow ties. I am too!
The groom likes bow ties enough that the wedding invitation actually said “bow ties preferred”. Nice!
Anyway, I decided a long time ago that I wanted to make a select few family members matching bow ties.
However, my Glowforge Pro is delayed (still), so I took matters into my own hands!
I designed a bunch…
Cigar Box Guitar
I while back I make cigar box guitar but make the box out of hickory Being a bagpiper I made the frets the same scale as the GHB The first two strings were my “drones” and the third I would fret to play a tune. [image]
Sneakin’ Up On It
There are 106 miles to Seattle, we have a Glowforge, half a pack of Proofgrade, it’s dark and we’re wearing sunglasses.
