Last Week’s Highlights:
We’re Off to See the Wizard Drop the Mic
I’ve had that challenge too - breaking up lines between cutting & engraving in a single piece makes my brain hurt a little.
Do Not Try This At Home

Does the Glowforge have onboard memory? Can’t it just recut a file immediately without re-processing the file?
It has a great deal of onboard memory, but if you simply replayed what was in it, you might get the wrong focus, wrong location, wrong material settings, etc, depending on how similar the new piece of material was to the old one.
After seeing some of the other mobile device stands folks made, I knew that one of the first things I wanted to try was a cat-themed one for my wife…
Yes, I left the masking on one kitty as an accent. I thought it made the design pop a bit.
I’m pretty happy with it, but made a few boo-boos. Luckily, I was able to use superpowers to fix one of them.
Boo-boo #1: Forgot to take into account material thickness when I resized the SVG in the GFUI. When the print w…
Oven Rack Relief
Testing the rapid-prototyping waters, I just used a sharpie on a piece of Proofgrade Maple to make a oven rack pull (riffing off of
@Jules example). 4m15s to engrave and cut.
Did I mention that I my ?
No Foolin’ ( Another Pre-Release!) Congrats @Drea !
Rita’s email came on Tuesday. I had to re-read it a few times before it actually sunk in that it wasn’t a joke, and that I really was being offered this wonderful opportunity. As so many others have said, my response was an incoherent:
YES! yesyseyesyesyesyesyesOMG yes, yes, yes!
(or something to that effect)
My Squeeforge was scheduled to arrive on Friday, which gave me a couple of days to quickly get my office and my act together … or so I thought. Instead it arrived on Thursday (p…

Arrrgggghhhh! Which Way?
My wife really liked the sign I made as a gift for a friend so she asked me to make a double sided pub style sign for her team at work. I am really happy with the way it came out. Once again I took advantage of the masking to make my paint work look a lot cleaner than it would be otherwise. For me the hardest part of this was making the vines interact with the main body they way they do. Making a line cut one place and score the other turned out to be a lot harder than I expected and took severa…
Birth of the UBU Boxes
So, I wasn’t going to post this but I made the mistake of mentioning it in another thread and now I have to.
Anyway, this it a good time to mention what I am doing this week. That extended Y-axis base for my handibot arrived and it needs beta testing. Also ever since the Glowforge arrived, I’ve been playing 3d Tetris in the office here so this is what I have done. I have taken a week off from the salt mine to work on “personal infrastructure”. Each project may or may not utilize one of the smar…
Somethin’ Fishy About This Highlights Reel
I needed a quick display item for the week and since we had a request waiting I decided to go ahead and just knock one out real quick - it took about half an hour.
(Note: I deliberately did not adjust the settings and didn’t mask because I wanted to also test for a couple of other things. The result comes out much darker than what you will likely see when you cut it, especially if you cut it out of Proofgrade.)
One thing that did surprise me…I would have expected lines cut that close…
A couple weeks ago I tried cutting a standard blank of Mother of Pearl for use as a musical instrument inlay. It was a complete failure.
Thought maybe a thinner material could work. So I tried a very thin 0.008" Mother of Pearl veneer. This is thin (and expensive) stuff, only about twice a thick as standard copy paper. You can see the difference between trying to cut the thick shell (right) vs. the thin MOP veneer on the left.
The latest cut is relatively precise with only sl…
Just a Quickie Tablet Holder
So I’ve been needing a tablet holder for when my reading at the kitchen table is electronic the tablet doesn’t lie flat.
I found this over at Ponoko, it gives two different angles without any mechanical adjustment.
The hard part was that if comes as an eps file. Turns out that Vcarve Pro will import eps and export SVG.
The file said it was for 1/4" so I grabbed some Homedepot 1/4" that mikes out to .200". Well, it was way too…
TLDR; This is not a feature. This is a suggestion on using a physical target to assist the Glowforge UI in auto centering / aligning designs on small one off materials. This is a THEORETICAL idea on how to do it. NOT AN ACTUAL FUNCTION.
This is a continuation to this thread. But this thread is mostly for single, one off ops.
Has the same idea- But used to recover failed ops.
As it sits now you have to manually align things in the UI. If you are doing a large batch-

How 2 Use the Inkscape Elliptical Box Generator
Starting to get into a few 3D designs now, which take me a little longer to assemble.
(I wind up with glue in places you would not believe!)
This was one of my earlier designs for a kitschy little brush stand. (Probably a bit of design overkill just to get it off the counter. Chuckle!)
This is the one that @Hirudin cut and assembled to help test parameterization last year…
(Link below if anyone wants to watch.)

Supplies: Proofgrade 1/8" Walnut - Op Time: 1hr 8mins
Exhaust from outside. Booster disabled.
You are seeing and will see a lot of boxes and trays from me because that is what I am working on right now, personal infrastructure.
I got the plans for this from
Somehow, the kerf is perfect for the box joints on the drawers but a bit tight for the main box. If I make another one I will adjust for that.
I have not installed the pulls for the bottom three drawers yet but I could not wait to share.
Be aware if you want to build on for yourself tha…
Tool Carousel - (Catalog Print)
Another catalog print for you!
I added a little embellishment to it as it’s for my desk at work. Enjoy.
Air Fresheners a la Glowforge
New Pre-Releaser (Congrats @nunzioc !)
I think this is the most priceless pic of all…
BIG Box…came later…I was on pins and needles, lol
Be sure to check these before the delivery person leaves!
Everything except the forge…the anticipation was killing me…
Bed packed so well!
It’s so beautiful…can’t believe it’s real…
Soooo much proofgrade stuff, and packed so well, and all of it is beautiful!
The first thing I made
Engineering to my wife’s preferences is proving more time consuming than I thought. There is always the “what if you did this” comment that comes after the project is almost complete. So far only three designs completed. The Banjo guy has a swinging arm and head; Mandolin Girl has a swinging arm, leg and moving eye on the moon; the campers have two kids bouncing up and down in different windows, a dog moving left and right in the door, and the flag swinging back and forth. Let’s see w…
Another new Pre-Releaser! (Congrats @dwardio !)
Trogdor is in the house!
Soooo, some of you may remember my laughable first attempt at making a scroll saw by hand with a jig saw (LOLOL!)
I learned a great deal of respect for scroll saw artists last night - Update on 8/17/16
Wound up with this:
And then I decided to try it with MUCH more precision, using a manual mill…which literally took me hours of tedious, hard work, and it still looked like crap, and it was destroyed in 1.5 seconds when I tried to resaw it into a thinner piece…
Well, what took me hour…
And Another! (Congrats @cynd11 !)
If you haven’t seen my
previous announcement, I was offered a Pre-Release Basic Glowforge! After mulling over my unworthiness for about 20 nanoseconds I quickly accepted. Email arrived on Monday night but I didn’t see it until Tuesday morning. Imaging my excitement when they said I could have the machine next day!
It arrived Wednesday March 29 by FedEx Priority overnight which means delivery by 10:30am. I don’t know if this will be also true for production units but thought folks might like…
Okay, sorry for the barrage of projects all at once but these are what I’ve created over the last 3 days and I’ll be taking a break for a couple days to give you a rest.
Here’s another project that has been rattling around in my head for a long time. I created it in Illustrator with all lines set to black (cut) except the score which was set to red. The stitching holes were a challenge. My first attempt (on the left) did not account for kerf and as a result the holes were too big, …
Proofgrade Battery Dispenser Box
This one is currently a problem child that I get asked about occasionally, so I’m reworking it for laser use. (Not quite done yet - it needs some serious size tweaking, this one holds too many batteries, but I figured I could show what it will look like done in the three Proofgrade plywood materials currently on offer. These are 1/8" ply, but I’ve got the current file set up to parametrically adjust for any thickness wood up to 6 mm. Frankly, it’s scary.)
The file uses a shall…
Here’s a project I’ve been wanting to do for a long time, but didn’t have it ready so I spent quite a bit of design time on it. I happen to own a Rubicoil spiral binding system (basically, the heavy duty punch that punches the closely spaced holes for a spiral coil). I wanted to make wooden covers for a blank journal.
You would not believe how many iterations I went through in Illustrator before I got the holes of the right size and spaced correctly. I used the blend tool in Illustrator betw…
